First of all the name, on our last visit to this hotel a
couple of years ago it was called "The Costa Calma Beach Hotel",
when we booked this year in the Thomas Cook brochure it was called
"The Hotel Costa Calma", however on arrival we now see it is
called the " Sunrise Costa Calma Beach Resort". The main reason for
the change of name is probably due to the fact that the adjacent hotel the
Nautilus Beach now forms part of the same complex with all the reception and
main dining facilities being in the former Costa Calma Beach section
there is now an internal access corridor linking the two hotel blocks plus
access paths in the grounds.
The hotel and grounds are spotless and well maintained,
I dont know if it was the time of year or just the growth since our last visit
but the vegetation was very lush giving a distinctive Caribbean feel to the
place

CHECK IN there were only two couples on the transfer
bus to check in, our rooms were ready so within an hour of arrival we were in
the pool, which was a relief as it was exceptionally hot!
The room was exactly as expected we had a different
aspect this time being on a lower floor looking over the garden area towards
Costa Calma. The only downside was again the air conditioning that only seems
to be about 10% effective we did report this but nothing changed we were not
really expecting any improvement as we had similar problems previously.
NAUTILUS SECTION
COSTA CALMA BEACH SECTION
GUESTS The hotel was a lot busier than our last visit
(We usually travel later in the year) There were more younger people and a
fair number of children mainly under 5s. As expected the guests were 80%
German 10% Brits and 10% Spanish and Italians.
POOLS There are three pools not counting the2 baby
pools and loads of sun beds. You could usually manage to find a sun bed but if
you want one in a prime position or with a parasol you
will need to be up early particularly if you are in a larger group. Reserving
is not allowed but clearly goes on and in this instance we can certainly blame
our Teutonic friends. I would not expect problems at quieter times. There were
no problems changing beach towels on this trip.
FOOD The food was very good and there is always
something available during the day at the two snack bars. The only
disapointment was the continental breakfast at the beach bar for late risers.
We like to take our breakfast alfresco and due to the alterations to the
main buffet this is the only opportunity however there is only a basic
selection. The allterations to the main buffet are as a result of the merger
of the two hotels, basically it has been doubled in size by construction of
large conservatory type building over the former patio garden area. The buffet
tends to be busy at all times (we did not have lunch there on this trip) The
evening dinner is held over 2 sittings 6.30 & 8.30. For the evening meal
you will be allocated a table for your entire stay, couples may have to share
during peak season but they will usually allocate same nationals.
BARS There are two bars in the main hotel and one in
the Nautilus plus the Snack Bar and Beach Bar. I dont know if it is a high
season thing but a BIG PLUS this trip was that the Beach Bar is now open at
night till about midnight great for sitting out with a drink after dinner
looking at the lights of the resort or if cooler in the bar where there is
sometimes some musical entertainment. Although it was busy the bar staff were
reasonably quick it is still self service the waiters clean tables and collect
empties only. Still no return of the large beer glasses. One handy tip if you
are on beer soft drinks or wine there are a number of self service pumps in
the snack bars and restaurant.
ENTERTAINMENT Having stayed previously we decided not
to sample the evening entertainment so I am unable to comment. I did
have a go at a couple of the day time activities and there was always
something going on organised by the enthusiastic animation team.
CONCLUSION If you are looking for a relaxing holiday
in a decent hotel with access to some
fantastic beaches plus the all inclusive features (you dont need to spend a
penny unless you are staying in the self catering section)
then this is one for your list. However if its a Brits abroad holiday in a
lively resort its not for you.
